Writing an obituary can be an emotional and challenging task, especially when you’re mourning the loss of a loved one. The obituary serves as a public announcement of the passing, a tribute to the deceased’s life, and an invitation to others to pay their respects. It’s an important part of the grieving process and a way to preserve the memory of the deceased for family, friends, and the community.
What Is an Obituary?
An obituary is a written notice that announces someone’s death and provides a brief summary of their life, achievements, and family members. It’s typically published in newspapers, online platforms, or funeral programs. An obituary often includes key details about the deceased, such as their birth and death dates, family information, a short biography, and the details of the funeral service.
Essential Components of an Obituary
A well-written obituary usually includes the following components:
1. Announcement of Death
This is where you formally announce the passing of your loved one. Be sure to include their full name, date of death, and age at the time of passing. Some people also choose to include the location and cause of death, but this is optional.
2. Biographical Information
In this section, you provide a summary of the deceased’s life. This includes their birth date, place of birth, parents’ names, education, career highlights, hobbies, and any special achievements. You can also mention personal traits or characteristics that made them unique.
3. Surviving Family Members
List the family members who survive the deceased, including spouse, children, grandchildren, parents, and siblings. You may also want to include other close relatives or important figures in the person’s life.
4. Predeceased Family Members
This section lists any immediate family members who passed away before the deceased. This can help readers understand more about the deceased’s family background.
5. Funeral and Service Information
Include details about the upcoming funeral or memorial service. This information is crucial for people who wish to attend and pay their respects. Be sure to provide the date, time, location, and any specific requests, such as donations in lieu of flowers.
6. Closing Words or Special Messages
You can end the obituary with a heartfelt message, quote, or short poem that reflects the feelings of the family or encapsulates the memory of the loved one.

John Michael Anderson
January 14, 1950 – August 20, 2023
It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of our beloved husband, father, and friend, John Michael Anderson, who passed away peacefully on August 20, 2023, at the age of 73, surrounded by his family in his home in Boston, Massachusetts. After a courageous battle with cancer, John has found peace and rest.
John was born on January 14, 1950, in Providence, Rhode Island, to Margaret and Thomas Anderson. He grew up with a passion for literature, sports, and helping others. After graduating from Providence High School, John pursued a degree in English Literature at Brown University, where he met the love of his life, Sarah Thompson. They were married in 1975 and spent 48 wonderful years together.
John was an extraordinary man who dedicated over 30 years of his life to teaching high school English at Boston High School, where he inspired countless students to develop a love for reading and writing. His dedication to education extended beyond the classroom as he spent his summers volunteering to teach adults to read through local literacy programs. John was known for his kindness, patience, and unwavering commitment to his students and community.
In addition to teaching, John loved spending time outdoors, whether hiking in the mountains or fishing with his sons at their cabin in New Hampshire. He was an avid Red Sox fan, attending games with family and friends whenever he could. His family and friends will forever remember his infectious smile, his love for storytelling, and his ability to make everyone around him feel valued and loved.
John is survived by his devoted wife, Sarah Anderson, his two sons, Michael Anderson (and his wife, Emily) and Daniel Anderson (and his wife, Claire), and his grandchildren, Olivia, Henry, and Grace. He is also survived by his sister, Katherine Martin, and several nieces and nephews. He is predeceased by his parents, Margaret and Thomas Anderson, and his brother, David Anderson.
A memorial service to celebrate John’s life will be held on August 26, 2023, at 11:00 a.m. at St. John’s Episcopal Church, 123 Main Street, Boston, Massachusetts. A reception will follow at the family home. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in John’s memory to the Boston Literacy Project, an organization he held dear to his heart.
John’s legacy will live on in the hearts of those who knew and loved him. He will be deeply missed but never forgotten.
Tips for Writing a Thoughtful Obituary
When writing an obituary, it’s important to strike a balance between providing essential information and capturing the personality of your loved one. Here are some tips to help you write an obituary that honors their life:
1. Keep It Personal
An obituary is a reflection of the person who passed away, so don’t be afraid to include personal anecdotes, stories, or even humor if it reflects their character. This helps readers connect with the deceased on a deeper level.
2. Be Clear and Concise
While it’s important to provide enough detail to give readers a sense of the deceased’s life, avoid making the obituary too long. Keep the writing clear, concise, and to the point, focusing on the most important aspects of their life.
3. Collaborate with Family Members
Writing an obituary can be a collaborative effort. Ask other family members for input on key details, important events, or special memories that should be included. This can help ensure the obituary reflects the views of the entire family.
4. Choose the Right Tone
The tone of the obituary can vary depending on the personality of the deceased and the preferences of the family. Some obituaries are more formal, while others are lighthearted or celebratory. Choose a tone that feels appropriate and respectful.
5. Proofread Thoroughly
Before submitting the obituary to a newspaper or online platform, carefully proofread the text for any errors in spelling, grammar, or dates. It’s helpful to have another person review the obituary to catch any mistakes you may have missed.
